Internship Exploration for Harvard Juniors: Strategies for Applying Across Industries

As a Harvard junior, you are reaching another milestone in your undergraduate journey: Internship Searching. Whether you’re focused on a particular field or still exploring what’s possible, this is the perfect opportunity to gain hands-on experience, develop transferable skills, and clarify your interests.

Many students find themselves drawn to more than one industry, and that’s completely normal. In fact, applying to internships across multiple sectors is very common and seen as strategic so you can explore options. It’s a chance to test-drive different environments, better understand your strengths, and discover the kind of work that excites and motivates you.

Navigating multiple industries can feel overwhelming without a clear strategy. Below are some approaches to help you explore and apply with purpose.

  1. Reflect on Your Harvard Experience
Start with introspection. Thinking about the past two years, what classes have sparked your interest? What extracurriculars or experiences felt most meaningful? Are there topics or fields that consistently capture your attention? Your answers can help guide your initial direction and open internship paths you may have been thinking about or have not considered.
  2. Focus Your Search (But Stay Open)
We recommend narrowing your internship choices and what you want to apply for to no more than 3–5 industry areas. Choice overload can lead to burnout or inaction. Prioritize the sectors that align with your interests, values, and skill development goals.
  3. Customize Your Application Materials
Internships are not a one-size-fits-all. A resume tailored for a role in policy research will differ from one targeting product marketing or biotech. Customize your resume and cover letter to highlight the most relevant skills and experiences for each industry. This extra effort will significantly improve your chances of standing out.
  4. Leverage the Power of Networking
Tap into your personal network and the Harvard alumni network. Conduct informational conversations with alumni or professionals in industries you’re curious about. These conversations offer invaluable insights, uncover unlisted opportunities, and help you navigate the “hidden job market.” Many students find their internships through referrals and relationships, not necessarily job postings.
  5. Use Job Boards Strategically
Explore multiple job boards such as Crimson Careers, Handshake, LinkedIn, and niche platforms tailored to specific industries. Use them not just to apply, but to research trends, language used in job descriptions, and recurring skill requirements.
  6. Explore Professional Associations
Most industries have professional associations that provide curated resources, career advice, event listings, and exclusive job boards. Joining or following these associations can offer insight on industry trends, valuable skills and expose you to opportunities beyond typical job platforms.
  7. Apply Directly Through Employer Websites
When you find a position of interest, always double-check the employer’s official website. Some organizations prioritize applications submitted directly through their portals and you might find additional openings not listed elsewhere.

Next Steps

The internship process is as much about discovery as it is about decision-making. Don’t be afraid to explore broadly, experiment with different types of roles, and adapt as you learn. By being thoughtful, strategic, and proactive, you’ll set yourself up for a meaningful summer experience and a more informed career path beyond Harvard.
