Where to Begin

Curious about launching your own venture or working at a startup? Entrepreneurship is about building something new—whether it’s a business, nonprofit, or innovation within an existing organization.

What’s an Entrepreneur?

An entrepreneur is someone who creates and leads new ventures. This could mean starting your own company, launching a social impact project, or innovating inside an existing organization (as an “intrapreneur”).

What’s a Startup?

A  startup is a young, fast-moving company focused on solving a problem in a new way. Startups often:

  • Operate in uncertain environments with limited resources
  • Require team members to wear many hats
  • Prioritize innovation and rapid iteration

First Steps

  • Explore: Join student groups, attend events at the Harvard Innovation Labs, and the Lemann Program on Creativity & Entrepreneurship,  or take a class in entrepreneurship (check out the CE 10 or CE 11: StudioLab on Creativity and Entrepreneurship).
  • Get Experience: Many startups don’t post formal internships—reach out directly to founders or alumni to ask about project-based work.
  • Network: The startup world is built on connectionsreach out to founders and alumni who are innovating to explore how you can contribute.
