Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP, one of the world’s leading global law firms with offices in strategic hubs of commerce, law, and government across North America, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East, is seeking to hire an IP-Technology Summer Legal Intern to join their award-winning Intellectual Property Practice Group.

With more than 300 lawyers and other professionals, Morgan Lewis has one of the largest IP practices of any full-service law firm. Through the IP Summer Internship, undergraduate and graduate students learn firsthand how companies and IP lawyers work together to protect and commercialize new technologies, making the program ideal for students interested in patent, technology strategy, and innovation-focused careers. High performing interns may receive a return offer for another internship or a full-time position, depending on their performance and the firm’s business needs.

The Morgan Lewis IP-Technology Summer Legal Intern will work closely with partners, associates, patent agents, paralegals, administrative and docketing staff, and external clients on patent applications and related projects within the firm’s Intellectual Property practice. The Intern will collaborate with attorneys and legal staff to develop an understanding of clients’ technologies, assist with the preparation and filing of patent applications, and provide other legal support to our clients. Through this hands-on experience, the Intern will gain exposure to the intersection of life sciences, intellectual property, and legal practice while contributing to a variety of client matters. Working as an integral member of the IP team, the Intern will collaborate with legal professionals to deliver the high-quality, responsive client service for which Morgan Lewis is known.

Responsibilities:

  • Searching for prior art and preparing patentability overviews
  • Preparing written descriptions of technology for review by attorneys, patent agents, and inventors
  • Conducting research
  • Coordinating with patent drawing professionals
  • Preparing materials for pre- and post-patent application filing activities
  • Attending invention disclosure meetings with attorneys and clients
  • Organizing, assembling, and updating prior art repositories
  • Maintaining, organizing, and indexing application files

Eligible applicants must:

  • Be enrolled in an accredited undergraduate or graduate program with an overall GPA above a 3.0
  • Be undergraduate or graduate students pursuing a degree in electrical engineering, computer science, or physics
  • For those pursuing an undergraduate degree, we are primarily seeking junior students, though sophomores are also encouraged to apply
  • Have strong analytical, research, and technical communication skills
  • Be genuinely interested in intellectual property, innovation, or technology commercialization (prior exposure to IP concepts is helpful but not required)
  • Be a US citizen or otherwise authorized to work in the United States

Program Details:

  • Compensation: The hourly rate for this internship is $22.00
  • Program Length: The internship will run for 8-10 weeks and will be offered in both full-time and part-time formats
  • Work Model: This position will follow a hybrid work model, combining in-office and remote work
  • Academic Credit: Interns may be eligible to receive academic credit for the internship if their academic institution offers such credit. Morgan Lewis will work with the intern and their school to help fulfill the institution’s requirements for academic credit.
