TECHNICAL AND ECONOMIC ASSESSMENTS OF EMERGING TECHNOLOGY
General Summary
GTI Energy, the nation’s leading research, development, deployment (RD&D), and training organization serving energy markets, has an opportunity for an experienced engineer in our Building Energy Efficiency group. The qualified candidate will perform R&D functions under supervision of senior technical staff. This role will focus on technical and economic assessments of emerging technologies, in both laboratory and field deployment settings. The qualified candidate will also engage in market analysis research, setup and programming of instrumentation and data acquisition, process control systems, and data analysis.

Work Location
The position will be based in the Chicagoland area at the GTI Energy Headquarters. While local candidates are preferred, GTI Energy provides relocation assistance for the right candidate. We offer a hybrid/core work week, where employees are remote Mondays and Fridays, and required to be on-site Tuesday through Thursday. There will be occasional travel for industry events, field site visits, or pilot implementations.
Primary Responsibilities
- Be a “quick study” with new emerging energy-related technologies. Develop in-depth technical understanding with an awareness of economics and applicable markets.
- Perform due diligence on emerging technologies to evaluate energy savings, lifecycle costs, and non-economic benefits
- Develop test plans to demonstrate promising energy efficient technologies in both laboratory and field studies
- Specify, procure, and install instrumentation and data acquisition systems to monitor technology performance
- Execute laboratory and field test procedures while complying with all safety protocols
- Use modeling and software tools to analyze data, summarize results, and report findings
- Work effectively with project teams, manufacturers, contractors, and customers at field sites while meeting project timelines within budget
- Perform other duties as assigned
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics
- Strong fundamental knowledge in areas such as thermodynamics, heat transfer, renewable energy, combustion, or psychometrics
- Knowledge of building energy systems (HVAC, water heating, electrical, building envelope) and related codes & standards
- Demonstrated hands-on skills in a laboratory or field environment, with a focus on residential and commercial HVAC and water heating systems, and/or renewable energy systems
- Familiarity with the design and testing of mechanical and ventilation equipment, HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems is a plus
- Knowledge of data acquisition, instrumentation and controls, programming experience is a plus
- Strong communication and technical writing skills to convey information to both technical and general audiences
- Ability to work effectively in small teams and independently
Education and Experience
- Minimum of a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical or related Engineering discipline; Relevant Industry Certifications are a plus (Licensed Professional Engineer, LEED AP, CEM, etc.)
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience desired or an advanced engineering degree
