Position Description: College Adviser
Organization Information:
The College Advising Corps (CAC) is a national non-profit organization that works to increase opportunities for students by making education beyond high school more accessible and equitable. College Advising Corps-Boston University (CAC-BU) places well-trained, recent college graduates as full-time advisers in 32 area high schools (Boston Public Schools, KIPP Academy Lynn Collegiate High School, Malden High School & Somerville High School) to help students navigate the complex processes of college admissions, matriculation and securing financial aid.
Position Overview:
CAC-BU seeks to select recent Boston-area college graduates for a year of full-time AmeriCorps service as college advisers in partner high schools. AmeriCorps member college advisers will report to program staff and to an on-site supervisor in each of the schools they will serve. They serve for 1-2 years in a paid AmeriCorps service position and receive a living allowance as well as a benefits package including health and dental, educational award, and tuition remission.
Essential Functions:
- Provide one-on-one admissions and financial aid assistance to students and
- Organize group events that encourage students and families to create post-graduate plans/apply to
- Establish productive working relationships with principals, counselors and teachers in assigned partner
- Assess, in consultation with CAC-BU and partner school, the needs of the school and adapt programs and activities to meet these
- Assist the CAC-BU and evaluation staff by collecting and interpreting key progress and outcome variables to evaluate the effectiveness of
- Record service activity data and submit monthly progress reports to document
- Maintain expertise in admissions and financial aid advising by participating fully in pre- and in-service training and other opportunities for professional
Marginal Functions:
- Assist in the efforts of the other CAC-BU
- Represent CAC-BU to potential supporters and other interested
- Assist with school-based events, such as clubs, field trips or enrichment activities
Qualifications:
- Tact, diplomacy, and a strong commitment to
- Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively in order to solve problems and reach
- Excellent organizational and communication
- Bachelor’s degree required. Preferably earned in May 2024, December 2023, May 2023, or December 2022, and preferably from a Boston-area college/university.
- Boston natives, graduates of the high schools CAC-BU serves or graduates of other CAC partner institutions are also preferred.
- Due to AmeriCorps requirements, applicants must be U.S. citizens, nationals, or lawful permanent resident aliens and consent to a National Service Criminal History and SORI check process.
Benefits Available:
- Living Allowance: A total of $29,377.08 (taxable) paid on a semi-monthly basis throughout the term of service/prorated based on start date
- Education award: $7,395; upon completion of 1,700 hrs. of service; distributed by AmeriCorps and subject to AmeriCorps regulations

Terms of Service:
- Position Start Date: July 2024
- Position End Date: July 2025
- Full-Time: 40 hours/week, times vary per school placement schedule (average 7:30 AM-4 PM).
- Length of Service: This position will have the option to extend for an additional full year if mutually agreed upon by program staff and the
- Location: Each adviser will be placed at a Boston-area high school. The majority of service hours take place at said high school, with additional service hours completed at Boston
- Supervision: Each adviser will report to a CAC-BU supervisor and an On-Site Supervisor designated by the high
- Benefits: Bi-monthly living allowance, health and dental, educational award and tuition remission.
