Jose Luis de Haro – ALM, International Relations

Where will you be living next year, and what will you be doing?
Washington DC, USA

What will you be doing?
I recently joined the International Monetary Fund as a Communications Officer in charge of multiple countries across the Western Hemisphere and Europe. I also am responsible for the communications strategy of certain parts of the Research Department. As part of my role I serve as a liaison between the Fund´s mission teams and the authorities, tailoring a communication strategy that fits the messages and goals of the organization

What advice do you have for Harvard HES students, now that you have graduated?
Focus on engaging with both your professors and colleagues in class. Also do not wait until you graduate to start planning your career change, if that is what you are looking for. My new opportunity at the IMF came right before my last class to complete my studies at Harvard Extension School.

In what ways has your Harvard Extension degree impacted your career?
The concentration in International Relations has helped me in understanding certain dynamics in my new role as a COMs officer at the IMF. Some of the different classes towards my degree were focused on Foreign Policy (both in the US and abroad). It gave me a good understanding on how different stakeholders interact both at a national and supranational level. Now that I´m experiencing that in real time, I´m glad I had the analyzing and strategic preparation thanks to some of the amazing professors in the program.
