Jeffrey Hastings – ALM, Industrial-Organizational Psychology

Where will you be living next year, and what will you be doing?
Cypress, Texas

What will you be doing?

Now that I have completed my studies in IO Psychology, I plan to utilize this knowledge to publish two workplace assessments with a few incredible classmates and the help of one of our favorite professors. The first assessment is a revised and updated Thematic Apperception Test that will reveal employees’ underlying motives, biases, concerns, and the way they see the workplace. If the model is shown to be statistically significant, we will offer certification to all HES IO Psychology alumni who wish to administer and earn income after graduation.

The second assessment is specifically designed to predict an individual’s preparedness for business ownership. I have data from over 1,200 interviews conducted between 1998 to 2013 to help formulate both theories.

Finally, in 2023 I will update a book that I’ve previously published, as well as publish a new one which shows how private blockchain technologies and a specific algorithm (to preserve security of data) can be used to develop equitable workplace assessments. This book will reveal how connecting performance reviews into new hire assessments not only helps employers identify the attributes of top performers, it can uncover potential issues with recruiter bias, diversity, equity, and inclusion.

What advice do you have for Harvard HES students, now that you have graduated?
The program can seem overwhelming at the start. In order to get the most from the program you should plan to organize your life in a way that prioritizes school for a while. For some, this may involve a lot of sacrifice. My key to success as a student was to prepare in advance, highly organize class notes, and actively brainstorm with my classmates.

In what ways has your Harvard Extension degree impacted your career?
When I enrolled at HES, I expected the curriculum and professors would be world-class. What I did not expect was how incredibly diverse, intelligent, and supportive my classmates would be. I am leaving HES with over 150 new connections who are located in North America, Europe, Australia, Africa, South America, and Asia (including Russia and Ukraine); some of which, I consider my closest friends. If more politicians shared these experiences, I’m confident there would be more love and less war world.
