In what ways has Harvard Extension School impacted your career and long-term professional goals?
Harvard Extension School has been transformative for both my career direction and my personal sense of purpose. When I enrolled, I had a passion for social equity and environmental sustainability, but I was still trying to connect the dots between values and vocation. The program provided the academic foundation, practical skills, and global perspective I needed to step confidently into the field of sustainable development.
HES helped me discover my passion for sustainable smallholder agriculture, my interest in environmental policy, and my commitment to participatory capacity building. More than that, it fostered a mindset shift: I learned to think critically, embrace diverse worldviews, and center Indigenous and local knowledge systems in sustainability solutions. These principles now guide my work and my long-term goal of contributing to inclusive, climate-resilient development—particularly in the Global South.
What advice do you have for HES students now that you have graduated?
Do not underestimate the power of continued education—HES allows you to be a lifelong learner without compromising your professional and personal commitments, and brings a diverse perspective to the table. Also, make the most use of Harvard’s vast network and resources—Hollis, “Ask a Librarian”, career resources, writing services, and many more—these are available to you the same as any other Harvard school.
