In what ways has Harvard Extension School impacted your career and long-term professional goals?
I could not be more thankful that I chose to enroll in my first sustainability class back in January 2021. It had been many years since I had been in formal schooling, but I knew that I wanted to pivot my career into this realm and that being “well-read” and passionate about the topic wasn’t going to be enough enable the switch. The first class felt eternal as I figured out scientific writing (as a business major for undergrad, I didn’t even know what APA7 was!), Canvas, how to juggle a demanding FT job and young kids as we were not quite yet emerging from the pandemic, plus my real estate business. It was so empowering to make it through, to attend classes with people of all age ranges from all over the globe, to realize how much I could contribute to and learn from others. I particularly loved the project work which has given me the real life experience I needed to be sure I was ready to launch my own business.

What advice do you have for HES students now that you have graduated?
Advice for others: take it one step/day/moment at a time. It can be easy to get overwhelmed if you think of ALL the things that need to get done in your school and professional life, but remaining in the moment you are in and putting one foot in front of the other will slowly and surely advance you through each task, assignment, class, and, eventually, the program.

I wish I had attended more events while I was in school (it was tough while I was working FT, raising young children, doing home renovations and going to school!). I’ve loved the opportunity to attend HES, Salata, HKS, and HEAA events, especially since the beginning of the year as my time has opened up a bit!
Also, I was 51 years old when I graduated. It can be easy to get comfortable where you are and accept a “good enough” life, but I knew I wanted my impact through my work to be something that deeply mattered to me and that impacts the world in a positive way. I know people far younger than me who think it’s “too late” for whatever they’re considering. I believe it’s never too late for a new start and to advance yourself in the direction you’d like to go.
