The Gordon Career Center works with students of all class years to translate their liberal education into a lifetime of meaningful work. Its innovative approach to career education encourages students to design their own careers by exploring the intersection between their interests, the skills they have and wish to acquire, and market demand.  The Center links students to alumni, employers, and graduate programs around the globe in fields that reflect the impressive breadth of opportunities explored by Wesleyan graduates.

Reporting to the Associate Director of Career Advising (Sciences and Mathematics), the Health Professions and Life Sciences Career Advisor works with students and recent alumni who intend to become health care clinicians—doctors, dentists, veterinarians, nurse practitioners, Physician Associates, optometrists, pharmacists, midwives, etc.—as well as with those seeking careers in public health, the life sciences, and clinical or research psychology.

The Health Professions and Life Sciences Advisor will:

  • Provide individual advising and e-mail consultations for students and alumni interested in the health professions, including but not limited to long-range planning, course selection, academic progress or difficulties, building an individualized curriculum in conjunction with experiential learning, MCAT/DAT timing and preparation, and post-graduate academic and career exploration;
  • Write institutional letters in support of Wesleyan candidates’ admission to medical, dental, and veterinary medicine schools. Serve as primary contact person with admission deans and directors;
  • Supervise the Health Professions Administrative Assistant;
  • Organize programs and information sessions related to careers in the health professions, public health, life sciences, and psychology, including admittance into related graduate schools;
  • Maintain the Health Professions and Public Health sections of the Career Center web site;
  • Represent Wesleyan at meetings and maintain professional relationships with NECOME, NEAAHP, and NAAHP;
  • Serve as the staff advisor for relevant career-oriented student groups;
  • Serve as primary point of contact for academic departments and centers, administrative offices, and student groups as assigned for the purpose of providing information about the office and collaborating on programming; 
  • Liaise with Wesleyan alumni and parents, including Wesleyan’s designated alumni professional networks and affinity groups, to provide connections for students and to cultivate job and internship opportunities;
  • Participate in the implementation of programs and events (employer information sessions, career treks to offsite locations, etc.) as needed throughout the year;
  • Serve on internal working groups as assigned;
  • Additional duties as assigned. 

This position is an on-campus position with potential for a hybrid (on campus and remote) schedule in the future. All positions may require on campus meetings.

Remote work is only considered for residents of MA, VT, NH, ME, CT, RI, or NY. (Relocation assistance to CT is available for those who qualify).

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least five years experience working in a related field.
  • Demonstrated interest in and knowledge of careers in the health professions and/or life sciences.
  • Experience providing support, training, or advising in a one-on-one or group setting.
  • Must be flexible and willing to adapt to the needs of the office as they arise.
  • Proven ability to work as a member of a high-functioning, collaborative team.
  • Strong communications skills, including the ability to present to both small and large groups..
  • Demonstrated commitment to work within a diverse environment and work collegially with individuals of different backgrounds.
  • Strong evidence of organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to learn new technology platforms quickly. 

Preferred Qualifications:    

  • A terminal degree (PhD, MD) in a related discipline.
  • Related experience providing academic or career advising to students seeking careers in the health professions.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the medical school admission process.
  • Exposure to a liberal arts college as a student, employee, or recruiter.

Salary Range: $61,300.00 – $72,300.00
