The Southern Poverty Law Center offers summer internships to exceptional first and second year law students who possess strong academic backgrounds, excellent writing skills, and a commitment to public interest work. The Center is a catalyst for racial justice in the South and beyond, working in partnership with communities to dismantle white supremacy, strengthen intersectional movements, and advance the human rights of all people. As an internationally recognized nonprofit organization, the Center is dedicated to reducing bigotry and oppression through outreach, education, and litigation.
At the Southern Poverty Law Center, we are a diverse team of passionate advocates who are fighting for the rights and dignity of people who have been marginalized, exploited, and abused. We bring litigation and implement community-focused strategies to influence positive change in the lives of children, immigrants, workers, the LGBTQ+ community, incarcerated people, victims of hate crimes, and those experiencing economic hardship.
SPLC seeks highly motivated paid interns who are passionate about civil rights and interested in supporting and learning more about our work. Interns who are committed to the ideals of justice, equity, diversity and inclusion, as well as committed to fostering an anti-racist work culture and anti-racist principles and learning are encouraged to apply. This paid internship is 10 weeks.
Interns may work in person or remotely from one of five offices:

Southern Poverty Law Center hosts currently enrolled students to work on current and cutting-edge legal issues. Students are supervised by our staff. We strive to create a work environment that is collaborative and intellectually rigorous. Summer interns assist Center staff with significant work related to their assigned practice group.
Interns will be assigned to a practice group and office based on experience and the needs of the Center. Summer interns are compensated by the Center. The Center pays a base of $600 weekly, with opportunities for additional compensation through overtime.
Interns are expected to begin in early June 2023. A minimum commitment of ten consecutive weeks is expected. We unfortunately are not able to split summers.
