GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
A research technician (Level II) position is available at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School in the laboratory of Dr. Allen Steere. The laboratory conducts translational research with a focus on human immune studies in patients with Lyme disease or rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In Lyme arthritis, studies are aimed at the elucidation of infection-induced autoimmune responses in patients with post-infectious Lyme arthritis. In RA, the goal is to characterize immune reactivity to certain commensal bacteria that may shape autoimmune responses in joints in an effort to understand causes of RA. Such knowledge will likely impact the diagnosis and treatment of this debilitating, chronic illness. Employees in this position are often included as authors on peer-reviewed publications. Thus, the position provides an excellent opportunity to develop a resume beneficial for graduate or medical school.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Duties for this position include performing basic molecular techniques (DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, cell culture), T and B cell assays, use of peptide:MHC tetramers for flow cytometry and single cell RNAseq experiments, constructing electronic databases and participating in data analyses.
Candidates are required to have a B.A. or B.S. degree and previous laboratory experience that will allow them to perform molecular and biological assays.
New graduates with at least 1-2 years of hands-on experience in a research laboratory, preferably as an independent study project. Those with a minimum of 1 year of directly related work experience will be considered for a Research Technician II position.
