Strategy and Business Development Intern (New York) – Summer 2026
OVERVIEW:
The D. E. Shaw group seeks motivated, intellectually curious students to join one of our strategy and business development (SBD) groups as interns in our New York office. Throughout the internship, you’ll have the opportunity to collaborate with a collegial team on challenging, impactful projects that are core to the firm’s internal and external development. This is a ten-week program that will take place in New York and is expected to run from June to August 2026.
WHAT YOU’LL DO DAY-TO-DAY:
You’ll take on projects that require rigorous analytical thinking and creative problem solving. You might assess which markets our trading strategies should expand into, enhance our marketing strategy and thought leadership, or participate in internal consulting work, such as researching where to open a new office or estimating our carbon footprint.
WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR:
- We’re interested in highly accomplished students with demonstrated intellectual curiosity and keen analytical skills.
- We seek individuals who excel at taking a structured and detailed approach to solving problems, communicate effectively, can drive projects forward, and have exceptional attention to detail.
- Applicants should demonstrate a client-focused approach and be able to work independently and as part of a team.
- Candidates who are interested in learning more about corporate strategy, capital markets, or the economy typically thrive in this role. Experience or involvement with clubs or internships related to consulting, venture capital, economic research, or product management/strategy is a plus but not required.
- Some of our SBD internships are for more technical candidates. For those roles, an understanding of Python, R, SQL, and/or Power BI is a plus.
- We welcome applicants currently enrolled in a four-year undergraduate program or graduate degree program across all fields of study. No previous finance experience is necessary. Students who apply to this internship are usually approaching their final year of full-time study.
- The position offers a monthly base salary of $11,000, overtime pay, a sign-on bonus of $7,500, travel coverage to and from the internship, and choice of furnished summer housing or a $10,000 housing allowance. It also includes a $3,300 stipend for self-study materials and a $4,000 stipend for personal technology equipment. If you have any questions about the compensation, please ask one of our recruiters.
