Getting Ready for the Academic Job Market: A Working Group
The Fellowships & Writing Center, the Derek Bok Center for Teaching and Learning, and the Mignone Center for Career Success will host a four-week academic job market materials series for Harvard Griffin GSAS students. Anyone whose graduation date is November 2024 and after is welcome to attend. The purpose of the group is for students to craft their job market materials holistically, preparing a strong and cohesive portfolio of materials before the academic market begins to heat up in August.
Each week will focus on a different component of the dossier:
– Week 1, July 14 & 17 (10-11:30am): The research statement and writing sample
– Week 2, July 21 & 24 (10-11:30am): The teaching statement
– Week 3, July 28 & 31 (10-11:30am): The cover letter and CV
– Week 4, August 4 & 7 (10-11:30am): The sample syllabus
The group will meet twice per week, 10-11:30am, via Zoom: On Mondays, for an introduction to each document, and on Thursdays, for peer-review of participants’ drafts. By the end of the series, you will have a draft of the core components of your academic job dossier.
By registering for this working group, you acknowledge that you are expected to attend all sessions. Monday presentations will not be recorded, and participation each Monday is required to participate in the respective peer-review session the following Thursday.
You will receive the zoom link, which will work for all 8 sessions, via email.
