Is the concrete jungle calling your name? If you’re looking to gain hands-on experience in New York City this summer, we’ve got great news!  Harvard Club of New York Foundation, the Mignone Center for Career Success (MCS), and the Office for the Arts (OFA) have a program to support students pursuing independent, self-arranged internships or research assistantships with NYC-based organizations.

This program provides funding for students who secure their own unpaid or low-paid internships in NYC. Find the full details here: MCS-Funded Independent Internships in New York City – Harvard FAS | Mignone Center for Career Success.

In addition to checking Crimson Careers, we’ve compiled a list of potential organizations to kickstart your search. This list is not exhaustive—consider it a source of inspiration as you explore opportunities! MCS advisors are also available for one-on-one brainstorming sessions to help you craft a strategy.

Additional Tips:

  • Leverage your network – Use Firsthand Advisors and LinkedIn to find Harvard alumni at your target organizations and request an informational interview. You can also find recruiting contacts in Crimson Careers.
  • Think beyond posted internships – Not all organizations advertise formal opportunities, but many (particularly smaller companies) are open to hosting interns if you reach out.
  • Cold outreach can work – If you don’t see a formal internship posting, send a well-crafted email expressing your interest to the organization’s careers or recruiting contact (often listed at the bottom of their website). Many students have had success using this method.
  • Apply to multiple opportunities and submit your applications as early as possible. Even if a company has a posted deadline, applying early is beneficial, as some organizations review applications on a rolling basis.

Don’t hesitate to come to MCS drop-in hours or schedule a 30 minute advising meeting—we’re here to help you navigate your search. Good luck, and we hope to see you in NYC this summer!
