During my winter internship at the Susan B. Anthony Birthplace Museum, I had the opportunity to immerse myself in the world of museum curation, historical storytelling, and community engagement. Going into the experience, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect, but I quickly found that working in a museum setting combined many of my interests—creative storytelling, audience engagement, and visual presentation.
One of my main responsibilities was assisting with future exhibition ideas, helping to reimagine how Susan B. Anthony’s legacy could be presented in fresh and engaging ways. I also worked on rearranging current exhibitions to improve visitor experience, making history feel more interactive and accessible. Additionally, I created engaging and humorous social media content, aiming to connect the museum’s mission with a wider audience in a relatable way. Developing donor engagement materials was another key part of my role, reinforcing the importance of sustaining non-profit institutions dedicated to historical preservation.
I worked closely with another intern, Delaney, and together we explored different aspects of museum work while also having the chance to experience the local area. One of the highlights of our internship was visiting MASS MoCA—a trip that deepened my appreciation for the intersection of contemporary art and historical storytelling. Another unexpected but memorable moment was ice skating on a nearby lake with Delaney, an experience that perfectly encapsulated the charm of winter in the Berkshires.

James, the program director, played a crucial role in making this internship an enriching experience. He not only guided us through our projects but also took the time to show us around Adams and its neighboring towns, giving me a deeper appreciation for the history and culture of the region.
Looking back, this internship expanded my understanding of museum work and public history, areas I hadn’t previously considered as potential career paths. It also reinforced my love for creative storytelling—whether through exhibitions, social media, or donor engagement. I left the experience with a newfound appreciation for the behind-the-scenes work that goes into preserving and sharing history, and I’m excited to see how these skills and insights will shape my future endeavors.
