MCS is pleased to offer the first of several new 20-Minute Tips videos to help Harvard Griffin GSAS students explore and apply for opportunities within and beyond academia.
For those pursuing academic postdoctoral and faculty positions, check out the first two videos:
- Academic CVs – Learn how to craft a dynamic, graphically pleasing curriculum vitae (CV).
- Academic Cover Letters – Learn how to write a cover letter when applying for an academic faculty job or postdoc.

In each of these videos, Laura Stark, MCS Associate Director for Academic Careers, provides a brief but detailed overview of recommended formats and content for these critical academic documents and reviews several sample documents, noting what works well and why.
We encourage you to view these videos and incorporate suggestions into your own documents. You may also reference accompanying samples in our MCS Guide to CVs and Cover Letters. Use these guidelines as inspiration to craft and tailor your own compelling documents and remember to follow the norms of your field!
Harvard Griffin GSAS students and recent alums (<5yr post-graduation) may book an advising appointment with Laura Stark through Crimson Careers. Laura will be happy to review your CV, cover letter, or other academic job search document .
COMING SOON! More 20-Minute Tips videos focused on exploring and pursuing careers beyond academia! These will include videos on Resumes and Networking. In the meantime, check out our MCS guides, Resumes and Cover Letters for PhD Students, Resumes and Cover Letters for Master’s Students, and Building Professional Connections.
