Application Essays
Generative AI can provide structure when you are framing essay responses to application questions that draw on personal experiences. It cannot, however, provide an in-depth look at an individual applicant’s own experience. Take care when applying generative AI to personal statements, activity descriptions, or short-form responses. Ultimately, essay responses should always be in the applicant’s own voice regardless of the source of feedback or suggested edits.
It is important, however, to consider individual graduate program expectations and policies on generative AI. As admissions officers and committee members become more familiar with the impact of these tools on application materials, more detailed guidelines may emerge. Because individual programs continue to have differing opinions on the use of AI tools on applications, it is the applicant’s responsibility to review this information prior to submission.
